Description
The bay laurel is a tree that grows naturally all around the Mediterranean. Part of the everyday surroundings of the Greek and Roman peoples, it was surrounded by many legends. The Oracle of Delphi used this plant in its rituals of divination. It was also closely linked to Apollo and Asclepius, gods of health and medicine.
In Rome, it was believed that the withering of the tree foretold an imminent disaster.
All around the Mediterranean, besides rituals and legends, bay was used both as a seasoning and as a medicinal plant.
